working in the French tradition

Maison Spectre is a small house. One studio, one bench, and a handful of unique pieces released each year.

We work from Singapore, in a room above the trees where the light changes all day. The city gives us our stones — the coloured-stone trade that passes through this part of the world puts rubies, spinels and sapphires within walking distance of the bench — and it gives us our sense of restraint.

The hand, though, is French. Our founder trained in the Parisian tradition of joaillerie: drawing before metal, silver worked thin, claw settings so fine they seem to hold nothing at all. That discipline is why our pieces look quiet from across a room and complicated up close.

Every design begins in one of two places. The first is the animal world — the coil of a snake, the arch of a cat's spine, a beetle's shell, a bird's eye. The second is painting. We spend as long in museums as in gem markets, and a Bonnard interior or a Redon pastel will decide a palette long before a single stone is chosen.

Every piece is unique. Because the stones are natural and chosen one at a time, no two pieces can hold the same colour, and nothing is ever made twice. Each one is finished and photographed in the atelier before it leaves. If you would like to see something in person, we receive by appointment.
